Update on District Council’s Street Scene Services
From 1 October this year there will be a new bin collection service in the Selby district, with brand new collections of mixed plastics as part of the kerbside recycling service. This means there will be less waste to put into your main refuse bin, so non-recyclable housing waste will be collected every other week.
You will still get weekly collections of waste – it’s recycling one week, other refuse the next, and so on. Garden greens collections will stay the same as they are now.
The bin collection service is run by Selby District Council and there are some key reasons why the Council is introducing these changes. Recycling more is better for the environment because less waste is left to rot and we use fewer raw materials as, for example, glass is turned back into new glass containers and cans are re-used as steel or aluminium. Also, local authorities are charged for all waste sent to landfill sites (where waste is dumped in the ground). This charge is going up every single year so it’s becoming more expensive to run the same service.
By introducing more ways to recycle, the Council’s supporting residents to reduce the overall amount of waste dumped – better for the environment, better for our natural resources and a more cost effective use of public money in the long-run.
The changes to bin collections are part of a much wider review of many different environment services including grass cutting, litter picking and removing graffiti. The Council is employing one company to carry out this work; this change brings with it a number of improvements. For example, there will be new ways of working to ensure the Council can be more reactive to residents’ needs; there’s a new commitment to undertake full litter picking before grass cutting takes place; there are additional measures to investigate fly tipping and a new tree maintenance service.
You can find out much more about these changes on Selby District Council’s website: www.selby.gov.uk. Alternatively, you can phone the Council on 01757 292225 or email: envfeedback@selby.gov.uk.
Remember, the new plastics pick-ups and revised collection timetable don’t start until 1 October. More details about your own collections will be sent to you nearer the time.
The new Newsletter is now on the site, if you have any suggestions of what we could put into the next one which will be out begining of August please do get in touch and let us know.
